Walter Mitty è un uomo gentile e sognatore che lavora all’archivio e sviluppo negativi della rivista Life. A volte, qualunque cosa stia facendo, si incanta e sogna ad occhi aperti imprese eroiche che lo vedono protagonista. È innamorato di una donna che conosce a malapena e anche nei suoi confronti la fantasia lo porta a immaginare di salvarle il cane da un edificio in fiamme o di sedurla come un avventuriero tra i ghiacci. Un giorno i suoi sogni diventano realtà quando un importante negativo scompare e lui è costretto ad inseguire in giro per il mondo il forografo che l'ha scattato.
