Adattamento cinematografico del musical di Broadway Rock of Ages. Al centro della storia c’è una ragazza di una cittadina del Kansas che arriva a Los Angeles per realizzare i propri sogni. Nella celebre Bourbon Room, destinata alla demolizione, incontra un ragazzo che sogna di diventare una rock star. La loro storia è vissuta sulle note di successi di Def Leppard, Joan Jett, Journey, Foreigner, Bon Jovi, Night Ranger, REO Speedwagon, Pat Benatar, Twisted Sister, Poison, Whitesnake e molti altri.
Un po' grossolano, forse superficiale, ma trascinante come la musica che racconta è questo musical, a cui si può imputare certo l'infantile costruzione narrativa, o la troppa semplicità delle scene coreografiche, ma al quale si riconoscono belle sequenze in cui regia e arrangiamento musicale trovano un’armonia eccellente (come nel perfetto mash-up iniziale tra Jukebox Hero e I Love Rock n’ Roll che unisce le vicende di Baldwin/Brand e Hough/Boneta).
Patinato come certo non erano i luoghi che racconta, ma quanto invece lo erano i video musicali del genere di cui Shankman vuole e riesce a riproporre l’estetica, Rock of Ages si smarca brillantemente da ogni possibile forma di nostalgia, restituendoci il vero gusto di rivivere una sottocultura che ci è molto simpatica, irruenta e fatta di esagerazioni. Every Rose Has Its Thorn, dicono i Poison, ma sono comunque spine di jeans e strass. (Elisa Salvadori)
