Bill Smith, investigatore della Commissione Nazionale per la Sicurezza dei Trasporti, viene messo a capo di un'indagine per far luce sulle cause di un incidente aereo. Fin dal ritrovamento della scatola nera, dove la voce sconvolta di un pilota rivela che i passeggeri sono già morti prima dell'impatto, dal ritrovamento di alcuni orologi digitali intatti che vanno all'indietro e da un oggetto sconosciuto rinvenuto tra i rottami, Smith capisce di trovarsi di fronte ad un incidente anomalo. All'indagine si affiancano il Dr. Arnold Mayer, brillante fisico teorico interessato all'incidente perché sembrerebbe confermare alcune sue teorie sui viaggiatori del tempo, e l'hostess Louise Baltimore (Cheryl Ladd, una delle storiche Charlie's Angels), bella e misteriosa, che sembra sapere sull'accaduto assai più di quanto dovrebbe...
Bill Smith, chief investigator for the National Transportation Safety Board, is hired to determine whether human error is the cause of an airline crash. He and his team of investigators are very confused by the words on the cockpit voice recorder by the crew relating to the crash. But at the same time, a theoretical physicist named Dr. Arnold Mayer has a real professional curiosity about the crash, which borders on science fiction. While giving a lecture, he talks about time travel and the possibility of visitors from the future. Smith discovers the involvement of an organization of time travellers from a future Earth...
..: RECENSIONE di FANTAFILM :..
John Varley, noto autore di Sf, ha scritto nel 1977 il racconto "Air Raid" che ha ispirato il film. L'idea di base è molto accattivante, ed ha tentato più volte cineasti assai noti, tra cui Douglas Trumbull (2002 la seconda odissea, Brainstorm), che è stato sul punto di portarla sullo schermo con Paul Newman e Jane Fonda come interpreti, ma nessun progetto è andato in porto. Nel 1983 l'autore ha rielaborato il testo, ricavandone una sceneggiatura ed un romanzo più ampio, ma altri sei anni sono trascorsi prima di arrivare a questa pellicola. L'opera di Anderson (La fuga di Logan, The Martian Chronicles) è corretta sotto il profilo formale, e l'immagine del futuro che presenta è coerente e credibile. Il finale, che si discosta decisamente dal testo di Varley, è stato girato in due diverse versioni, una delle quali lascia spazio ad un eventuale sequel.
