Capitan America - Il primo Vendicatore nasce da una sceneggiatura originale di Larry Wilson e Leslie Bohem scritta per conto dei produttori Mark Gordon e Gary Levinsohn della Marvel Enterprises nell'aprile
1997. Nel 2000, la Artisan Entertainment entrò a far parte del progetto come studio coproduttore al termine di un concordato di genere finanziario con la Marvel in base al quale si sarebbe impegnata al
cofinanziamento di 15 produzioni cinematografiche (tra le quali Capitan America), direct-to-video e serie televisive di quest'ultima.[4] A complicare un pieno avvio della produzione una disputa legale fra il
creatore del fumetto Joe Simon e la Marvel Comics riguardo alla comproprietà dei diritti d'autore sul personaggio, finita in tribunale. Nel 2003, le due parti mediarono una soluzione chiudendo la controversia.

L'apertura è ambientata al Polo Nord, nel presente. Un gruppo di scienziati ritrova fra i ghiacciai un misterioso oggetto dai motivi blu, bianchi e rossi.
Quindi si torna indietro al marzo 1942. Steve Rogers è un ragazzo statunitense, debole e rachitico, che vuole a tutti i costi arruolarsi nell'esercito per servire il suo paese. Dopo numerosi tentativi falliti,
il dottor Abraham Erskine gli offre la possibilità di sottoporsi alla somministrazione del siero del supersoldato, composto chimico che trasforma Steve in un soldato fisicamente superiore. Il dottor Erskine è
però vittima di un attentatore dell'HYDRA, organizzazione militare finanziata da Hitler e capeggiata da Johann Schmidt; Schmidt è stato il primo supersoldato creato da Erskine, rimasto sfigurato in quanto il
siero non era pronto per l'utilizzo................
STORYLINE
It is 1942, America has entered World War II, and sickly but determined Steve Rogers is frustrated at being rejected yet again for military service. Everything changes when Dr. Erskine recruits him for the
secret Project Rebirth. Proving his extraordinary courage, wits and conscience, Rogers undergoes the experiment and his weak body is suddenly enhanced into the maximum human potential. When Dr. Erskine is then
immediately assassinated by an agent of Nazi Germany's secret HYDRA research department (headed by Johann Schmidt, a.k.a. the Red Skull), Rogers is left as a unique man who is initially misused as a propaganda
mascot; however, when his comrades need him, Rogers goes on a successful adventure that truly makes him Captain America, and his war against Schmidt begins.
