Independence Day è un film di fantascienza del 1996, diretto da Roland Emmerich.
Narra di una immaginaria e quasi riuscita invasione aliena della Terra, con la distruzione di parecchi monumenti simbolo degli Stati Uniti d'America,
come l'Empire State Building, la Casa Bianca e la Library Tower di Los Angeles.
La premiere del film era stata annunciata negli Stati Uniti per il 3 luglio,
ma molti cinema decisero di iniziare le proiezioni della pellicola la sera del 2 luglio, ovvero in corrispondenza dell'inizio cronologico degli accadimenti del film stesso.
La mattina del 2 luglio 1996, il SETI (il programma di Ricerca di Intelligenze Extraterrestri) avverte uno strano rumore, classificato come probabile segnale dal cosmo di una forma di vita.
In breve tempo viene rilevato un gigantesco oggetto, grande 550 chilometri di diametro, quanto un quarto della Luna, in avvicinamento dallo spazio; viene scartata l'ipotesi del meteorite perché inizia a rallentare.
Subito dopo vengono monitorati una quindicina di "frammenti" che sembrano staccarsi da esso, grandi ognuno 27 chilometri di diametro, e il mondo viene messo a soqquadro dall'arrivo di gigantesche astronavi aliene che iniziano a posizionarsi sopra i più grandi centri abitati del pianeta.
Per coordinare l'attacco sull'intero pianeta, gli alieni utilizzano la rete di satelliti terrestre per farvi rimbalzare un segnale di sincronizzazione (un conto alla rovescia), disturbando così le normali trasmissioni.
David Levinson è uno specialista in telecomunicazioni e nel tentativo di rimediare ai disturbi sulle comunicazioni riesce ad interpretare il segnale anomalo.
Per far giungere la notizia al Presidente, ma soprattutto all'ex-moglie Constance, che lavora alla Casa Bianca, David decide di recarsi a casa del padre Julius, per portarlo con sé fino a Washington.
Qui la sua ex-moglie Constance riesce a farlo entrare ed a farlo parlare col Presidente. Il Presidente, messo al corrente della scoperta, ordina l'evacuazione delle città minacciate (con scarsi successi, mancando 27 minuti al termine del conto alla rovescia) e si prepara a lasciare Washington assieme al suo staff.
Intanto, Russell Casse, un pazzo disinfestatore di campi, che crede di essere stato rapito dagli alieni, ha dei rapporti molto brutti con il figlio maggiore, Miguel, che non lo accetta.
Proprio in questa atmosfera di rabbia, appaiono gli alieni, senza però, provocare vittime. I quattro scappano poi, con il loro camper.
Alla fine del conto alla rovescia le astronavi aliene aprono il fuoco sulle città sopra le quali erano piazzate.
In particolare a New York la nave aliena si piazza sopra l'Empire State Building e distrugge il grattacielo con il suo raggio mortale.
L'esplosione travolge il resto della città;, in un oceano di fuoco e fiamme, cadono anche le Torri Gemelle e la Statua della Libertà. Stessa sorte tocca a Los Angeles, a Mosca e a tantissime città europee e del mondo.
Anche la Casa Bianca viene rasa al suolo dalle forze aliene, ma prima che accada ciò,
gli uomini della sicurezza fanno salire il Presidente Thomas J. Whitmore e sua figlia, insieme al Segretario della Difesa, Albert Nimzicky, al Generale Grey, al Maggiore Mitchell e a David, suo padre Julius e Constance, sull'Air Force One...
Independence Day is a 1996 American disaster science fiction action film about an alien invasion of Earth.
The narrative focuses on a disparate group of individuals and families as they converge in the Nevada desert and, along with the rest of the human population, participate in a last-chance counterattack on July 4 – the same date as the Independence Day holiday in the United States.
It was directed by German director Roland Emmerich, who co-wrote the script with producer Dean Devlin.
On July 2, an enormous alien mothership enters Earth's orbit and deploys 36 saucer-shaped 15 mile wide ships over major cities around the globe.
In New York City, David Levinson (Jeff Goldblum), a satellite technician for a television network, discovers transmissions hidden in satellite links that he believes the aliens are using to coordinate an attack.
David and his father Julius (Judd Hirsch) travel to the White House and warn President Thomas J. Whitmore (Bill Pullman) of the attack.
The President, portions of his Cabinet and the Levinsons narrowly escape aboard Air Force One as the alien spacecraft destroy Washington D.C., New York City, Los Angeles, and other major cities.
Meanwhile, USMC Captain Steven Hiller (Will Smith) is part of a counterattack against the ships.
His girlfriend Jasmine, her son, and their pet dog survive the destruction of Los Angeles by hiding in a storage closet in a freeway tunnel.
The next day, July 3, Jasmine commandeers an abandoned maintenance truck to drive to Hiller's military base.
Along the way she picks up several survivors.
She also finds the injured First Lady (Mary McDonnell), who had been flying out of Los Angeles by helicopter when it was knocked down in the alien attack...
