Sette tedeschi antifascisti fuggono da un campo di concentramento nazista nel 1936.
Gli aguzzini che li inseguono li catturano uno alla volta e li crocifiggono.
Soltanto uno di loro riesce a salvarsi.
Ispirato al romanzo di Anna Seghers (1942), sceneggiato da Helen Deutsch e fermamente voluto dal regista, il film è girato interamente in studio in bianconero da Karl Freund.
Nove "nominations" all'Oscar, ma nessun premio, è il primo film impegnativo di Fed Zinnemann, regista di origine austriaca, che arriverà nel dopoguerra alla notorietà internazionale con pellicole come Mezzogiorno di fuoco e Non bussare alla mia porta.
Notevole soprattutto la prova d'attore di Spencer Tracy.
