Trama :
Il film narra la storia di un giovane texano, Joe Buck ( Jon Voight ), il quale, stanco della sua vita noiosa e piena di brutti ricordi e del suo lavoro di lavapiatti in una tavola calda, decide di partire per New York. Nella Grande Mela Joe, nelle vesti di un cowboy da rodeo, spera di guadagnarsi da vivere facendo il gigolò, in quanto, per sua stessa ammissione, l'unica cosa che gli riesce bene è fare l'amore ( è un ragazzone alto, biondo, e con un certo fascino, molto bravo a letto ). I primi tempi a New York si rivelano però poco soddisfacenti: il fare lo spaccone lo rende ridicolo e l'incapacità di approcciarsi alle clienti non gli procura soldi. La prima volta che va a letto con una donna ( Sylvia Miles ), ignara del suo lavoro di "stallone di professione", si rivela un disastro: infatti quando le va a chiedere il compenso la donna scoppia in lacrime e alla fine paradossalmente è Joe a darle dei soldi ( per quietarla e farle passare la crisi ), imbarazzato e stupito.
Un giorno Joe incontra in un bar Enrico Salvatore Rizzo ( Dustin Hoffman ), detto "Sozzo", anche se lui preferisce il soprannome non dispregiativo "Rico"; italoamericano, Rizzo è zoppo, figlio di un lustrascarpe...
