Clairton, Pennsylvania, cinque amici, Michael, Nick, Steven, Stanley ed Axel, conducono una vita tranquilla che si divide tra il loro lavoro in una acciaieria, grandi bevute al bar del loro amico John e cacce al cervo; i primi tre sono in procinto di partire per il Vietnam ed uno di loro, Steven, il più timido ed impacciato, sta per convolare a nozze, contro il volere della madre, con Angela, una donna più grande di lui ed incinta di un altro uomo. Michael e Nick amano la stessa donna, Linda, che, a causa di un padre violento ed alcolizzato, si trasferirà nella loro abitazione dopo la loro partenza.
Durante la festa per il matrimonio di Steven ed Angela, Nick chiede la mano di Linda, che accetta. Stanley litiga e colpisce la fidanzata e alla fine della lunga festa, quando Angela e Steven si allontanano in macchina, Michael, ormai completamente ubriaco, corre nudo lungo la strada rincorso da Nick che, una volta raggiuntolo, gli chiede di fargli una promessa: in nessun caso lui dovrà abbandonarlo.
Il giorno dopo i quattro, senza Steven, partono per la caccia e, dopo scherzi e discussioni, Michael colpisce un cervo, uccidendolo con "un colpo solo", realizzando quella che per lui è la visione della caccia e della vita ossia la lealtà.
Vietnam: i tre amici si ritrovano casualmente in un'azione di guerra, pur appartenendo a reparti diversi, e vengono catturati dai viet cong insieme ad altri soldati. Costretti a "giocare" alla roulette russa mentre i carcerieri scommettono su di loro, i tre passano dei minuti terrificanti in bilico tra la vita e la morte. Steven è il primo a cedere e, dopo avere sparato deviando la pistola in modo che il colpo riesca solo a sfiorarlo, viene buttato nel "pozzo": una gabbia immersa nel fiume infestata da topi dove la morte dovrebbe sopravvenire in breve tempo mentre Michael riesce a persuadere Nick a tentare la fuga...
