Biografia
Stephanie Natalie Maria Cole (Los Angeles, 6 febbraio 1950) è una cantante statunitense.
È figlia del cantante Nat King Cole.
Tra i suoi successi ci sono: This Will Be, Sophisticated Lady (She's a Different Lady), Pink Cadillac ed Unforgettable, con cui ha duettato virtualmente con il padre.
Debutta nel 1975 con l'album Inseparable, il cui primo singolo estratto This Will Be arriva alla vetta della R&B Chart e vince il grammy award come "Miglior performance femminile R&B", interrpompendo la sequenza di Aretha Franklin, che vinceva quel premio ininterrottamente dal 1968. Nello stesso anno vince anche il grammy come "Migliore nuova artista". Tuttavia la sua carriera ha una frenata d'arresto all'inizio degli anni ottanta, per via di alcuni seri problemi legati all'abuso di sostanze stupefacenti.
Ripresasi dai propri problemi, Natalie Cole torna nel 1985 ed il suo album Everlasting vende due milioni di copie e riceve numerosi riconoscimenti. La carriera di Natalie Cole prosegue con diversi album e singoli in classifica, ma è soprattutto nel 1991, grazie a Unforgettable, un duetto virtuale con il padre Nat, che la Cole ottiene la notorietà internazionale. Unforgettable, tratta dall'album Unforgettable... with Love infatti vince numerosi Grammy fra cui "Album dell'anno", "Disco dell'anno", "Miglior performance tradizionale pop".
Negli anni successivi, Natalie Cole ha pubblicato numerosi album, apparendo occasionalmente nelle classifiche pop (come nel 1997 con il singolo A Smile Like Yours). I suoi album hanno continuato ad avere ottimi risultati di vendite, e la Cole è considerata una delle principali artiste rappresentanti il genere smooth jazz, trasmessa spesso nelle stazioni radio jazz. Il 9 settembre 2008 è stato pubblicato l'album Still Unforgettable, il cui primo singolo Walkin' My Baby Back Home è nuovamente un duetto virtuale con Nat King Cole.
Altre attività
Oltre alla carriera di cantante, Natalie Cole ha proseguito sin dagli anni ottanta una attività sporadica di attrice. La Cole è infatti apparsa in ruoli minori nei telfilm Il tocco di un angelo, Law & Order e Grey's Anatomy.
Inoltre la Cole è comparsa nel video del rapper Nas, Can't Forget About You, che utilizzava un campionamento di Unforgettable.
Nel 2000, la Cole ha pubblicato una autobiografia, Angel on My Shoulder, in cui racconta la propria lotta contro la droga, che ha segnato buona parte della sua vita.

Natalie Cole's liner notes for Still Unforgettable make it sound like the Great American Songbook had been collecting dust on her shelf since 1991, when she recorded Unforgettable, the album that shot her into the mainstream. (She had been releasing Top Ten R&B albums since 1975, but Unforgettable was something else, a cultural phenomenon that inspired a Saturday Night Live skit.) Still Unforgettable features another duet with father, "Walkin' My Baby Back Home," but its make-up isn't that much different from albums like Take a Look (1993), Stardust (1996), or Ask a Woman Who Knows. While she has been reinterpreting classics on and off for nearly two decades now, she can't be faulted for phoning it in; in fact, she seems to be having more fun with the songbook than before. If you're keeping score at home, Nat King Cole was 32 when he recorded "Walkin' My Baby Back Home"; Natalie was in her late 50s when she recorded the duet with her father's vocals -- which would, for the sake of the song here, make her old enough to be her father's mother. |
