Giovane scienziato tenta esperimenti di trasporto della materia smaterializzandola all'origine e ricomponendola a destinazione. Usa sé stesso per le prime prove, ma l'intervento accidentale di una mosca lo rende vittima della sua invenzione.
Remake di L'esperimento del dottor K (The Fly, 195 di K. Neumann. La situazione di base è la stessa, aggiornata e più sofisticata, ma gli sviluppi sono radicalmente diversi. Dopo gli anni '70 l'horror è fondato sul corpo, le sue metamorfosi, i suoi smembramenti, ma nessuno supera Cronenberg in direzione biologica. È il suo film più costoso, e il più ricco per elaborazione formale, ma è anche una commovente storia d'amore. Straordinario J. Goldblum.
NoteNel 1989 è stato realizzato un sequel intitolato La mosca 2, con protagonista Eric Stoltz.
L'applicazione del make-up di Jeff Goldblum arrivava a durare 5 ore al giorno.
Per creare la mosca il truccatore Chris Walas studiò libri sulle malattie deformanti.
