Plot:
2001 is a story of evolution. Sometime in the distant past, someone or something nudged evolution by placing a monolith on Earth (presumably elsewhere throughout the universe as well). Evolution then enabled humankind to reach the moon\'s surface, where yet another monolith is found, one that signals the monolith placers that humankind has evolved that far. Now a race begins between computers (HAL) and human (Bowman) to reach the monolith placers. The winner will achieve the next step in evolution, whatever that may be.
Trama:
La prima parte del film si svolge nell\'Africa di tre milioni di anni fa: un gruppo di ominidi, guidati da un capo, sopravvive a fatica in un ambiente arido e ostile; un giorno davanti alla loro grotta appare misteriosamente un grande monolite nero; gli ominidi venendo a contatto col monolito imparano a usare strumenti, a uccidere animali per cibarsene e ad uccidere altri ominidi per conquistarne il territorio.
La seconda parte del film si svolge nel 2001 (un anno del futuro nel 1968 ) : il dott. Heywood Floyd è chiamato in missione su una base lunare dove è stato scoperto un grande monolito nero sotterrato ad arte in tempi remoti. Floyd è accompagnato a vedere lo scavo con il monolito ancora nel buio della notte lunare. Proprio mentre Floyd e gli altri stanno fotografando il monolito il primo raggio di sole del giorno lunare illumina il monolito che rivede così la luce dopo millenni di oscurità e immediatamente emette un forte segnale in direzione di Giove.
