Atlanta vocalist and songwriter Lizz Wright, whose gospel-infused style evokes thoughts of such artists as Sarah Vaughan and Oleta Adams, is creating a buzz as a young artist to watch. Her first demo tape provoked a flurry of interest in the jazz world and, after a showcase performance in New York, her uncommon gifts prompted The Verve Music Group to sign her welcoming her to the label of Billie Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald, Dinah Washington, Vaughan, Shirley Horn, Abbey Lincoln, and Diana Krall.
Barely in her twenties, Lizz Wright has already established herself as a powerful singer for a new generation and promises to take a notable place in their ranks.

Wright recently recorded vocal tracks on renowned pianist Joe Samples upcoming CD, to be released in April 2002 on The Verve Music Groups GRP label. A top-selling and charting jazz artist, Joe Samples large following will help to spread the word about Lizz Wright in advance of the release of her own forthcoming debut recording on Verve.
Born January 22, 1980, Lizz Wright is from the small, southern Georgia town of Hahira. She attended Houston County High School, and received the prestigious National Choral Award. Upon graduation, Lizz attended Georgia State University in Atlanta, the city she now calls home.
My first introduction to jazz came in my father s church, relates Lizz who was also the churchs pianist and musical director. I didnt really know it as jazz then; I only knew that it was a sound that excited me. The blues were always prevalent throughout the interpretations of the gospel hymns and that is when I noticed people would wake up and begin to move, and maybe even shout or clap. Wright is most recent studies have found her at New Yorks New School, studying with Dr. Richard Harper, and in Vancouver with vocalist Dee Daniels.
In Atlanta, where she performs with the quartet In the Spirit, Wright has acquired a strong fan base and critical acclaim. In 2000, Creative Loafing, Atlanta is alternative newspaper, anointed In the Spirit the best jazz group in Atlanta and said of Lizz Wright: Wright is truly a singers singer. Her beautiful tone and exquisite phrasing, combined with just the right nuance, point to the fact that Ms. Wright may well be Ms.
Right. She has it all.In a short time, Wright has also built a reputation in the larger jazz community. Legendary bassist,producer, composer, and musical director of the Hollywood Bowls jazz orchestra, John Clayton said: It is exciting to hear the blossoming flower-voice of Lizz Wright. Wright is commanding range, technical assurance, and dark, opulent timbre are phenomenal in someone her age. Si comincia con Lizz Wright, artista afro-americana cresciuta alla scuola del gospel parrocchiale in Georgia, che proprio in questa data compie il suo terzo compleanno artistico, posto che al 2002 risale il suo debutto in occasione del tributo in memoria di Billie Holiday, a Chicago: e da allora è stata tutta una escalation, con il contratto Verve – major a cui non sfugge nulla – e la pubblicazione, di lì a poco, di Salt a fianco di affermati jazzisti quali Danilo Perez al piano, Brian Blade alla batteria, Chris Potter al sax. Il compleanno artistico in Perugia viene invece festeggiato con l\'uscita di Dreaming Wide Awake (stessa label), disco su cui è incentrato il concerto pomeridiano al Teatro Pavone: uno spettacolo molto vario, che attraversa il pop, il blues ed anche certe sonorità afro, con poco jazz, forse, ma cui filo conduttore è senza dubbio la sua suadente e spontanea voce, che impressiona non tanto per estensione, quanto per le tensioni che riesce a creare. Un aroma spiccatamente bluesy dall\'accoppiata batteria e chitarra, e quando la Wright comincia a cantare A taste of honey è come una calamita, prende e stringe dentro. La naturalezza del suo canto è comunque la sua nota caratteristica, ed i vocalizzi mai sbavati e sempre alla sua portata sono riprova che l\'ambientazione etno-folk-pop le si addice perfettamente. Così, in Stop (già \"Don\'t tell me\" nella versione di Madonna) rievoca alcune densità canore alla Tracy Chapman o alla Tanita Tikaram di qualche tempo addietro, mentre la timidezza si percepisce \"per differenza\", fra quando presenta i pezzi e quando li canta. Impeccabili i suoi musicisti, essenziale il contrabbasso di Massimo Biolcati, complementari le due chitarre, l\'elettrica di Mike Moreno e l\'acustica di Anthony Peterson. Un accordo di sesta/nona da parte di quest\'ultimo per introdurre Wake up little sparrow, echi vocali adagiati sui colpi asciutti della batteria di Jonathan Rix; ancora più suggestive divengono le inflessioni del sud in Old man, quando nel ritornello la Wright passa ai registri superiori. Una deliziosa I\'m confessin\', su supporto quasi totalmente acustico, e prima di salutare il pubblico Hit the ground e Get together, per poi concedersi al bis con le lead-tracks dei suoi due album, Dreaming Wide Awake e Salt. |
