I Portishead sono un gruppo trip hop di Bristol, Regno Unito, formatosi nel 1991 dall'incontro di Beth Gibbons e Geoff Barrow (che precedentemente aveva lavorato con Massive Attack e Tricky); ai due si affiancano il tecnico del suono Dave McDonald e il chitarrista Adrian Utley.
La cantante Beth Gibbons ha pubblicato un album da solista nel 2002.
Sono diventati famosi per la loro riluttanza a esibirsi live e ad esporsi in generale al pubblico, basti pensare che il loro primo album, Dummy, fu pubblicizzato da dei manichini, e che sono rarissime le interviste a Beth Gibbons.
I primi due album sono nati grazie a una collaborazione a distanza: Geoff Barrow creava le basi, che poi inviava via posta o in via telematica a Beth Gibbons: lei incideva le sue parti vocali per poi rimandare il risultato a Barrow per la finalizzazione.
Il loro primo album doveva essere la colonna sonora di un loro film, "To Kill a Dead Man", che hanno poi girato insieme. Parti del film originale appaiono nel video di "Sour Times".
Dopo la pubblicazione nel 1998 dell'album dal vivo Roseland NYC Live i membri della band si sono concessi a lavori al di fuori del gruppo, primo fra tutti l'album da solista Out of Season della cantante Beth Gibbons coaudiuvata da Rustin Man (Paul Webb, bassista dei Talk Talk).
L'attesissimo terzo album, Third, è uscito il 28 aprile 2008. Prima dell'uscita, l'album è stato preceduto da un tour live che ha visto, dopo circa un decennio, il gruppo inglese esibirsi in due città italiane, Milano e Firenze, ripercorrendo i brani dei precedenti 2 album in studio e anticipando quasi tutti i brani dell'ultimo LP "Third".
