[::Sinopsys::]
Discworld is a comedic fantasy book series by the British author Terry Pratchett, set on the Discworld, a flat world balanced on the backs of four elephants which, in turn, stand on the back of a giant turtle, Great A'Tuin. The books frequently parody, or at least borrow ideas from, J. R. R. Tolkien, Robert E. Howard, H. P. Lovecraft and William Shakespeare, as well as mythology, folklore and fairy tales, often using them for satirical parallels with current cultural, technological and scientific issues.

Since the first novel, The Colour of Magic (1983), the series has expanded, spawning several related books and maps, four short stories, cartoon and theatre adaptations, and even music inspired by the series. The first live-action screen adaptation for television (Terry Pratchett's Hogfather) was broadcast over Christmas 2006. A feature film, The Wee Free Men is currently in development and will be directed by Sam Raimi[2]

Newly released Discworld books regularly top The Sunday Times best-sellers list, making Pratchett the UK's best-selling author in the 1990s, although he has since been overtaken by Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling. Discworld novels have also won awards such as the Prometheus Award and the Carnegie Medal. In the BBC's Big Read, five Discworld books were in the top 100, and a total of fifteen in the top 200.

[::Biography::]
Terence David John Pratchett, OBE (born 28 April 194 is a British fantasy, science fiction and children's author. He is best known for his popular and long-running Discworld series of comic fantasy novels. Pratchett's first novel, The Carpet People, was published in 1971, and since his first Discworld novel (The Colour of Magic) was published in 1983, he has written two books a year on average. Pratchett is also known for close collaboration on adaptations of his books but has held back from Discworld feature films so far.[2]

Pratchett was the UK's best-selling author of the 1990s,[3][4] and as of December 2007 has sold more than 55 million books worldwide,[5] with translations made in 33 languages.[6] He is currently the second most-read writer in the UK, and seventh most-read non-US author in the U.S.[7] In 2001 he won the Carnegie Medal for his children's novel The Amazing Maurice and his Educated Rodents.[8]

Despite his popularity, Pratchett is often described as having a ?cult following? - a factor seen as having, in the past, hindered his literary recognition.[9][10] Pratchett, who was named an Officer of the Order of the British Empire "for services to literature" in 1998,[6] holds the record for the most shoplifted books in Britain.[11]
