Since his remarkable performance at the royal wedding of his Royal Highness prince Willem Alexander and princess Maxima in February 2002, Carel Kraayenhof has become a true Dutch tango phenomenon. He moved the princess to tears with his beautiful interpretation of Astor Piazzolla’s ‘Adiós Nonino’. More than 55 million people around the world witnessed the ‘tears of Maxima’. On that day, the Dutch opened their hearts for Argentinean tango music. The single version of ‘Adiós Nonino’ sold 30,000 units and the 'Tango Royal' album, featuring the famous hit song, has sold nearly 100,000 units. In addition, Tango Maxima, an independent release by Kraayenhof’s own orchestra Sexteto Canyengue, has sold nearly 30,000 units.

The Dutch began to visit the many concerts of Kraayenhof and his Sexteto Canyengue orchestra and were charmed and swept away by the passionate compositions and arrangements. The versatility of Argentinean tango, with its rough compositions and romantic melodies, touched them deeply. Not surprisingly so, for a live concert of the Sexteto awakens the soul and nestles itself in the brain. What Kraayenhof had said for years – that tango is music for the people – appeared to be true, judging from the massive attendance and appreciation of the public, wherever Canyengue performed. Whether they played at the classical Concertgebouw, in a pop venue or a small provincial theatre, people came to see them play. Tango: that magical mix of folk melodies from Italian, Spanish, French, Polish, Russian and German emigrants, blended with a firm dose of Chopin, Bach and Gershwin and a taste of African rhythms. The Argentinean tango performed by Canyengue is a full music experience that belongs in a theatre, on a classical stage and at a jazz festival.

The great maestro Astor Piazzolla must have recognized the great talent of Kraayenhof when he personally invited the bandoneón player to work for him on Broadway in the tango musical ‘Tango Apasionado’ (1986). Kraayenhof, then still performing with his first tango ensemble Tango Cuatro (1985), took this chance with both hands and went on a 3-month trip to New York to work with the maestro. Upon his return to the Netherlands, Kraayenhof established tango sextet Sexteto Canyengue (198 and went on to become very popular in Argentina, Uruguay, the United States, Malaysia, Turkey en in most West European countries, before becoming popular his own home country in 2002.

With Sexteto Canyengue, Kraayenhof and bandoneón musician Leo Vervelde began to establish a tango repertoire that mainly included tracks a la Osvaldo Pugliese, the other great tango master. It was Pugliese who, after a visit to the Netherlands, was very impressed with Kraayenhof’s Sexteto. The maestro invited them on a tour with Pugliese’s own orchestra in Argentina and Uruguay in 1990. It was an amazing success and established Kraayenhof’s name within the world of tango.
