Nel 1898 il minatore d'argento Daniel Plainview accidentalmente scopre un giacimento di petrolio in una delle sue miniere. In poco tempo guadagna abbastanza soldi da poter mettere in piedi una sua piccola compagnia di estrazione. Uno dei suoi lavoratori rimane ucciso in un incidente sul lavoro e Plainview prende con sé il figlio rimasto orfano facendolo passare per suo e affermando che la moglie è morta dandolo alla luce. Inizialmente il petroliere si vuole servire della presenza del ragazzo per presentarsi come un padre affettuoso e dedito alla famiglia per influenzare positivamente e convincere alla vendita i proprietari dei terreni con depositi di petrolio, ma successivamente si affezionerà al ragazzo. Nel 1911 Plainview è ormai diventato uno dei petrolieri più importanti della California quando viene contattato da un giovane di nome Paul Sunday, il quale gli vende un'informazione circa un giacimento di petrolio nella proprietà della sua famiglia a Little Boston, in California
