Nell'autunno 1959 all'Accademia Welton, una scuola elitaria e conformista ubicata sulle colline del Vermont, i metodi assolutamente insoliti di un nuovo insegnante di materie umanistiche, John Keating, sono considerati con timore e sgomento dal preside Nolan e dalle famiglie. Keating affascina la sua classe non solo per intelligenza e simpatia, ma per novità pedagogiche: per lui la poesia sopra ogni altra cosa è il fulcro per far nascere e sviluppare lo spirito creativo e per "liberare" nei ragazzi non solo l'amore per Keats, Withman o Shakespeare (considerati in maniera meno arida e puramente letteraria), ma tutte le premesse migliori per la più indovinata e fertile scelta di vita. Nella classe di Keating, che matura le suggestioni culturali anche con iniziative divertenti e stravaganti, sette allievi lo seguono con interesse particolare, capeggiati da Neil Perry, un diciassettenne da sempre dominato da un padre autoritario, che scopre in se stesso la vocazione di attore. I sette ragazzi hanno fondato la "Società dei Poeti Estinti" e di notte lasciano spesso e volentieri l'Accademia per riunirsi in una grotta, per meglio comunicare tra loro e recitare versi, propri ed altrui. Gerard Pitts, Todd Anderson, Charlie Dalton, Knox Overstreet, Richard Cameron, Steven Meeks vivono così una loro specialissima stagione, fervida di scoperte ed entusiasmi. Ma i metodi del professor Keating e le azioni dei suoi allievi si scontrano con il conformismo e la serietà che sempre hanno regnato a Welton.
