Mentre se ne sta all'ancora nel mare ligure a bordo del suo splendido panfilo ed in buona compagnia, sul finanziere Emanuele Sansoni piomba la Guardia di Finanza (che già ha fatto una visitina ai suoi uffici romani). Sansoni fa appena in tempo a indossare una tuta da subacqueo e a tuffarsi, lasciandosi preoccupato alle spalle tutti gli imbrogli, le iniziative truffaldine ed i traffici di un impero di dubbia lega. Ma altrove e ben custodito c'è del materiale riservatissimo e compromettente, c'è un dossier di nomi eccellentissimi e di foto da recuperare ad ogni costo. Scotta, ma è prezioso. Sansoni prende un taxi e, per intanto, si fa portare a Milano. Cominciano così non solo corse folli, ma incredibili avventure per il buon tassista genovese Gino Sciaccaluga, l'eterno sconfitto di tutte le situazioni (onusto, tra l'altro, di una moglie petulante e di una cascata di debiti), sempre in ambienti ed alberghi lussuosi ed a contatto di un mondo inusuale e fascinoso. Sansoni ha posto in salvo nelle valigie i documenti che gli premevano, per futuri e ben prevedibili ricatti. A un certo momento, l'innocuo e goffo Sciaccaluga diventa suo complice involontario, essendosi, tra l'altro, follemente innamorato della sedicente "sorella" del bancarottiere, la quale sorella altri non è, se non il Sansoni medesimo che, novello Fregoli, appare e scompare - in "taxi" e in ogni luogo - in ambedue i ruoli. E sempre dando ordini tra i più contradditori. Infatuato più che un adolescente, Sciaccaluga viene obbligato a firmare carte, che non sono che la rituale punta dell'"iceberg" di nuove operazioni truffaldine del fertilissimo Sansoni. Rivestito da capo a piedi, dimenticato quasi della sua lontana moglie (lontana, ma intanto tra le robuste braccia di un carabiniere poco scrupoloso nel suo servizio di indagatore), Sciaccaluga pilota sempre il suo "taxi", tra l'altro riverniciato a dovere, perché sulle piste dell'uomo di affari ci sono anche quattro "killers" della mafia. Al termine delle tante peripezie e dopo una vincita a Montecarlo (fatta dal neofita Sciaccaluga, ma prontamente sequestrata ed impiegata da Sansoni per noleggiare un elicottero con destinazione Casablanca), il tassista scopre che non esiste nessuna sorella, mentre Sansoni pianta in asso il disgraziato e fugge nell'America del Sud. Frustrato, deluso nei suoi slanci amorosi e tradito su tutta la linea, Sciaccaluga torna in Liguria, scopre la infedeltà della moglie e, piano piano, riprende l'abituale tran-tran. Ma un giorno Sansoni torna in Italia; intrallazzando, riesce a riprendere il controllo del suo impero e poi, in uno slancio di interessata gratitudine, chiama sul suo panfilo Sciaccaluga, per fargli firmare, dietro lauto compenso, una certa carta, che annullerebbe la intricata operazione finanziaria posta in atto davanti ad un notaio lussemburghese per la quale il buon tassista altri non era che un prestanome. A questo punto Sciaccaluga si rifiuta: non firma e, con ciò, si ritrova in un sol botto enormemente ricco, si insedia sul Panfilo, dà ordini a banche e ad eccellenze varie, riservandosi una gioia supplementare: quella di un giretto quotidiano in un taxi, di cui il perfido Sansoni, finalmente scornato e sconfitto sul suo più congeniale terreno, sarà l'immusonito conducente.
