Plot :

At the beginning of the film, Alex (Hugh Grant) is a washed-up former pop star who is attempting to revive his dwindling career by hitching his name to the rising star of Cora Corman (Haley Bennett), a young megastar who has asked him to write a song titled "Way Back Into Love." During an unsuccessful attempt to come up with words for the song, he discovers that the woman who waters his plants, Sophie Fisher (Drew Barrymore), has a gift for writing lyrics. Sophie, a former creative writing student reeling from a disastrous romance with her former English professor Sloan Cates (Campbell Scott), initially refuses. Alex cajoles her into helping him by using a few quickly-chosen phrases she has given him as the basis for a song. Over the next few days, they grow closer while writing the words and music together, much to the delight of Sophie's older sister...

Alex Fletcher è una ex popstar, il cui periodo di gloria è ormai finito da tempo. Fu lui a fondare una band di grande successo negli anni ottanta, chiamata PoP!. Quando Cora Corman, moderno incrocio tra una tantrica Madonna, una seducente infantile Britney Spears e una sensuale Shakira, nonché giovanissima pop star in vetta alle classifiche musicali, lo invita a registrare un duetto con lei, Alex vede immediatamente la possibilità di reinventarsi una carriera, stanco di esibirsi a sagre campagnole o rimpatriate studentesse classe 80 che gli portano, oltre all'eccessivo calore di mogli e fidanzate pendenti dalle sue coreografie anni ottanta, anche il rischio di lussazioni all'anca.
Tuttavia, ha solo pochi giorni di tempo per scrivere una canzone, oltretutto in piena competizione con altri artisti. Sfortunatamente, Alex non ha più scritto nulla da anni, e sa bene di aver bisogno di aiuto per la composizione del testo. Alex scopre presto che Sophie Fisher, una ragazza che annaffia le piante del suo appartamento, può fare al caso suo.
Sophie, uscita da una brutta relazione, è inizialmente riluttante ad aiutarlo...
