Plot :

In 1969, child prodigy William Miller struggles to fit in with the world. His widowed mother Elaine – who has led him to believe he is 12 years old, until William's older sister, Anita, tells their mother to tell the truth. His age is actually 11; his mother had him start first grade at 5 years old and then he skipped 5th grade. Their mother strictly controls and protects him and his older sister Anita, forbidding rock music and other unwelcome influences, driving Anita to leave home and become a flight attendant.

In 1973, 15-year-old William, influenced by the rock albums left by his sister, aspires to be a rock journalist, writing freelance articles for underground papers in San Diego. Rock journalist Lester Bangs, impressed with his writing, gives him a $35 assignment to review a Black Sabbath concert. He can't get backstage, but opening band Stillwater arrives, and after he flatters them with critical praise they bring him along. Lead guitarist Russell Hammond takes a liking to him, partly because of William's new friendship with veteran groupie Penny Lane, though she prefers...

William Miller è un timido adolescente di San Diego desideroso di diventare un giornalista musicale, nonostante la madre Elaine, iperprotettiva, sogni per lui un futuro da avvocato. Il ragazzo incontra il cinico e disorganizzato - tuttavia geniale e generoso - giornalista rock Lester Bangs, che gli offre il suo primo incarico: recensire un'esibizione dei Black Sabbath.

Sfortunatamente William non ha né un biglietto né le credenziali da giornalista per poter assistere al concerto. Nel parcheggio dello stadio William incontra prima le "Aiuta-complessi", delle groupies, la cui figura di spicco è l'apparentemente superficiale Penny Lane (che si rivelerà poi una ragazza sensibile e profonda), fan sfegatate degli Stillwater, la rock band che si trovava quella sera ad aprire il concerto dei Black Sabbath. Inizialmente il gruppo scaccia in malomodo William, credendolo un giornalista ficcanaso. Ma quando i musicisti scoprono che il ragazzino è soprattutto un loro fan, lo accolgono dietro le quinte del concerto insieme a Penny. Con lei nasce una sincera amicizia, dettata anche dall'età: lei, così sfacciata e maliziosa seppur fosse...
