Frank Morris, reo di molte fughe dalle carceri statunitensi, viene trasferito al penitenziario di Alcatraz, denominato "The Rock" e famoso per le condizioni che vi rendevano impossibile le evasioni. Frank, inoltre, ben presto dovrà rilevare la durezza del carcere speciale e la disumanità del suo direttore. Quando al penitenziario pervengono i fratelli Clearence e John Anglin, già conosciuti altrove, Morris si decide e propone un piano di fuga che viene minuziosamente realizzato. Quando la fuga dei tre viene scoperta, scatta il dispositivo di ricerca che non approda a nulla. Frank Morris, guilty of many leaks in US prisons, was transferred to Alcatraz penitentiary, called "The Rock" and famous for the conditions that made it impossible escapes. Though the closed nature, Morris makes some friendships: Doc, the painter shy that you cut the fingers of one hand when they are taking their permission to paint; Litmus, an Italian who calls himself "Al Capone"; the Negro Inglese who appreciates the newcomer and protects it, Clarley, the undecided who do not come to the appointment of the escape. Frank also soon will have to detect the severity of the special prison and the inhumanity of its director. When the penitentiary received by the brothers Clearence and John Anglin, already known elsewhere, Morris decides and proposes an escape plan that is meticulously made.
