Qualche volta per scrivere un articolo, per mantenere una promessa, per ispirare i più giovani, per combattere la depressione, per arricchirsi, per accumulare obiettivi, per alimentare il proprio sogno e realizzare quello degli altri si è disposti a tutto, anche a scalare l'Everest. Al confine tra Cina e Nepal, la vetta è la meta di un gruppo eterogeneo che ha deciso di affidarsi a Rob Hall e alla sua società, l'Adventure Consultants, per tentare l'impresa. Rob è sposato con Jan e in attesa di una figlia che sogna di cullare in fondo alla discesa. Ma le cose si complicano presto perché il campo base è affollato da dilettanti e da altre spedizioni commerciali gestite da Scott Fischer, alpinista col vizio dell'alcol. Rob e Scott trovano però ragione e modo di collaborare e il 10 maggio 1996 partono alla volta della vetta alta 8.848 metri. La scarsa preparazione dei clienti, combinata all'approssimazione organizzativa, ritarda la salita dei due gruppi. Nondimeno alcuni di loro toccheranno con mano la vetta a fianco di Rob, sempre generoso coi suoi clienti. Poi una tempesta improvvisa si solleva, soffiando sulla discesa e sul destino degli uomini.
