La serie narra delle avventure di un viaggiatore del tempo e dello spazio noto come Il Dottore. Egli è un Signore del Tempo, razza aliena proveniente dal pianeta Gallifrey. Come ogni Signore del Tempo, si muove su un TARDIS (Time And Relative Dimension In Space, ossia Tempo e Dimensione Relativa nello Spazio), un veicolo in grado di mantenere insieme diversi piani di realtà (l'interno è estremamente grande, mentre l'esterno può assumere diverse fattezze ed essere più piccolo dell'interno, grazie alla sovrapposizione di due differenti piani dimensionali interno/esterno) e di viaggiare nello spazio e nel tempo (grazie alla capacità del TARDIS, che si nutre di radiazioni temporali scorrendo lungo il flusso del tempo, e si sposta nello spazio squarciando il tessuto spazio-tempo in un punto, probabilmente in ossequio alla teoria M, e congiungendolo ad un altro, nel quale riappare). Il Dottore si muove su un vecchio TARDIS, Modello 40 (un pezzo da museo, in confronto ai successivi TARDIS, ma comunque un'invenzione inconcepibile per il suo elevatissimo livello tecnologico e scientifico da ogni non Signore del Tempo).
