A New Orleans nel 1939, il furfante Charlie, pastore tedesco e "cane da strada", fuggito dal canile municipale insieme all'amico bassotto Itchy, si precipita nella bisca, che gestiva insieme al socio Carface, per avere da questi la sua parte di utili. Il socio si è infatti misteriosamente arricchito durante la prigionia di Charlie, ma non vuole affatto dividere con lui, e, fattolo ubriacare, lo fa poi uccidere dal suo killer. Così Charlie si trova nell'aldilà, nel Paradiso dei cani, dove lo accoglie una deliziosa levriera rosa. Quando però capisce d'essere morto, perché l'orologio della sua vita si é fermato, riesce a rimetterlo in moto, e a tornare quindi vivo sulla terra, mentre la levriera gli grida che non potrà più tornare in Paradiso. Charlie vuol vendicarsi di Carface, e scopre come questi trucca le corse: tiene infatti prigioniera una bambina orfana, Anne-Marie, capace di parlare con gli animali, e perciò di sapere in anticipo chi vincerà le corse. Riuscito prontamente a liberarla, Charlie le promette che darà il denaro ai poveri e per lei troverà un papà e una mamma che l'amino. In realtà il cane vuole sfruttare la bambina, come faceva Carface, e subito, vincendo moltissimo denaro, diventa padrone di un favoloso locale notturno. Ma presto Anne-Marie diviene per lui così importante da convincerlo a dare realmente il suo denaro ai poveri, e a trovarle veramente una coppia di sposi che possano farle da genitori: Harold e Kate.
