Sull'isola delle formiche la vita non scorre certo tranquilla. All'inizio dell'estate le cavallette invadono la colonia e, sotto la guida del dispotico Hopper, pretendono una parte consistente del cibo messo da parte con fatica dalle formiche. Stavolta la regina riesce a guadagnare tempo e Hopper fa sapere che tornerà alla fine dell'estate per riscuotere quanto si aspetta. Flick, formica eccentrica e imprevedibile, si offre per andare a cercare insetti più grossi per f ronteggiare il ritorno di Hopper. Arriva in un circo dove si esibisce una troupe scalcinata di insetti vari. Li convince e li porta tutti nell'isola, dove vengono scambiati per veri guerrieri. Flik decide di costruire un grosso uccello per spaventare le cavallette. Ma ad un certo punto arriva un insetto che cerca gli artisti, li riconosce e li chiama per nome davanti a tutti. La regina, la figlia e tutta la comunità delle formiche si sentono presi in giro, e Flik viene espulso. Gli insetti/artisti vedono Flik molto triste e, quando giunge la notizia che le cavallette sono tornate, decidono di recarsi sull'isola per combattere. Viene messo in movimento il finto uccello che provoca panico tra le cavallette. Hopper sfida Flick e sta per umiliarlo, quando lui reagisce e fa sollevare tutte le formiche. Arriva nel frattempo un uccello vero, e mangia Hopper. La calma ritorna sull'isola. Il circo degli insetti può ripartire. Flik sposerà la principessa, futura regina.
