Corteggiata da figlio beone di un industriale e da onesto geologo, Lucy sposa il primo, ma la sua perversa cognata la calunnia presso il fratello. Quasi una tragedia. Melodramma con la M maiuscola ma, per chi ama il genere, bellissimo per il disegno dei personaggi, la scansione dei fatti, l'eleganza della scrittura. D. Malone vinse l'Oscar di attrice non protagonista. Tratto dal romanzo di Robert Wilder, è di un Kitsch così irresistibile, anche se riscattato dallo stile, che sicuramente ha ispirato gli ideatori di Dallas e Dynasty. (Il Morandini)
Aggiungo che il regista di “Lontano dal Paradiso” e di “Carol” dichiara di ispirarsi ai classici anni ’50 dei film di Douglas Sirk, considerato un maestro del genere.
