E' un'epoca in cui le risorse naturali sono limitate e la tecnologia avanza con un ritmo rapidissimo. Il luogo in cui vivi è controllato, ciò che mangi è programmato e chi ti serve non è una persona, è un essere artificiale. Giardinaggio, cura della casa, compagnia, c'è un robot per ogni necessità. Tranne l'amore. L'emozione è l'ultima, controversa frontiera dell'evoluzione robotica. I robot sono considerati elettrodomestici sofisticati, non si pensa possano provare sentimenti. Ma con tanti aspiranti genitori cui non è stato ancora concesso di avere figli, si può tentare. E la Cybertronic Manifacturing ha creato la soluzione. Si chiama David. E' un robot, il primo programmato per amare, che viene adottato in prova da un impiegato della Cybertronic e da sua moglie, il cui figlio naturale malato terminale, è ibernato in attesa che la scienza scopra una cura che possa salvarlo. Anche se diventa piano piano il loro figlio, e fa di tutto per essere amato, una serie di circostanze inaspettate rendono la vita impossibile per David. Respinto dalle macchine e dagli umani, aiutato da Teddy, il suo supergiocattolo protettore capace di pensare, David inizia un viaggio esistenziale, scoprendo un mondo in cui la linea che separa robot e macchine è profonda, ma sottilissima...
