Alla fine degli anni Trenta due simpatici giovanottelli lasciano la campagna per approdare, pieni di speranze e dall'allegria, in una bella e grande citt?. Guido ? il pi? vivace dei due. Vuole aprire una libreria nel centro storico. Laltro, Ferruccio, smarrito e poetico, fa il tappezziere, ma si diletta a scrivere versi comici e irriverenti. In attesa che le loro speranze si realizzino, il primo trova un lavoro come cameriere ale Grand hotel e il secondo s'arrangia facendo il commesso in un piccolo negozio distoffe. La citt? offre ai due giocosi amici mille occasioni di entusiasmo e d'avventure. In un'Italia paludata, elegante, marmorea, goffamente militaresca, Guido e Ferruccio rincorrono la felicit?. Con brio, con incoscienza. Guido s'innamora di una maestrina repressa da un ambiente che vive di buone maniere e di conformismo, Dora, che per? ha dentro di s? tanta voglia di lasciarsi andare, di vivere pienamente la sua et?. Conquistare la giovane maestra ? come scalare una montagna e Guido ci prova escogitando l'impossibile. Le appare continuamente davanti, all'improvviso, si traveste da istruttore di scuola, la rapisce con la Balilla, la incanta con i suoi trucchi furbissimi. Ma Dora non prende sul serio la passione di Guido, anche perch? ha il cuore occupato da un segreto: ? promessa sposa di un vecchio compagno di scuola.
