Il giovane Chance Wayne torna nella cittadina natale al fianco di Alexandra Del Lago, una diva sul viale del tramonto, di cui è diventato l'amante. In realtà, lui persegue un duplice disegno: diventare un grande attore cinematografico e sposare la dolce Heavenly - che lui aveva in precedenza sedotto e abbandonato - figlia di un uomo politico locale. Il padre della ragazza non ha però alcuna intenzione di lasciare la figlia nelle mani di Chance e cerca in ogni modo di allontanarlo dalla città.
