Plot :

In AD 180, Spanish-Roman General Maximus Decimus Meridius leads the Roman army to a decisive victory against the Germanic tribes near Vindobona, ending a long war on the Roman frontier and winning the favor of Emperor Marcus Aurelius. The emperor is already old and dying, and although he has a son, Commodus, he asks Maximus to succeed him as a regent and turn Rome back into a republic. The emperor speaks with Commodus afterwards and attempts to explain his decision. A weeping Commodus retorts that Marcus Aurelius never valued his son, and smothers the emperor.

Maximus is confronted by Commodus, who asks for Maximus' loyalty, but the general suspects his plot and refuses. General Quintus, a subordinate and old friend to Maximus, chooses to follow Commodus' orders and sends men to the Roman province of Spain to kill Maximus's wife and son on their farm estate. Maximus manages to escape his own execution and makes the long journey to his farm on horseback, but finds his family already dead and their bodies crucified. He buries them and collapses. A passing slave caravan captures Maximus, assuming that he is a deserter. Maximus is taken to "Zucchabar" (Roman province of Mauretania) in North Africa and...

Trama :

Nell'anno 180 d.C., il valente generale Massimo Decimo Meridio[2] guida l'esercito romano alla vittoria durante la guerra contro i Marcomanni in Germania, guadagnandosi ancora di più la stima dell'anziano imperatore romano Marco Aurelio, gravemente malato. Marco Aurelio, che sente prossima la fine, sceglie, in luogo del figlio Commodo, considerato inadatto al ruolo, il generale Massimo come proprio successore al quale affidare il compito di far tornare Roma ad essere una repubblica, restituendo il potere al senato, ovvero al popolo romano, come era prima dell'avvento dell'età imperiale.

Inizialmente riluttante, Massimo chiede tempo per decidere e si ritira in tenda a pregare gli Dei affinché lo aiutino a decidere per il suo futuro e proteggano la sua famiglia, idealmente rappresentata da due statuette della moglie e del figlio, che Massimo porta con sé. Nel frattempo Marco Aurelio comunica la sua decisione al figlio, che era giunto da Roma insieme alla sorella Lucilla, vedova, con un figlio ed innamorata di Massimo. Commodo, deluso e afflitto per la scelta del padre, lo uccide soffocandolo con il proprio petto prima che renda pubblica la sua decisione. Massimo capisce che l'imperatore non è morto per cause naturali, ma è stato ucciso dal figlio, dunque rifiuta di sottomettersi a Commodo, che allora dà ordine a Quinto, nominato prefetto del Pretorio, che non essendo resa pubblica la scelta di Marco Aurelio, credeva Massimo un traditore, di far uccidere...
