Trama :

Il giovane ed ingenuo Chris Taylor, dopo aver lasciato il college, si arruola volontario nella fanteria dell'esercito americano, entrando nella 25ª Divisione di Fanteria.

Nel settembre 1967, partito come volontario per la guerra del Vietnam, insieme a un'altra recluta di nome Gardner viene poi assegnato ad un plotone appartenente alla "Compagnia Bravo" per svolgere operazioni di pattugliamento nella giungla vietnamita in una zona al confine con la Cambogia. Passa tempo soprattutto a recuperare rifornimenti dagli elicotteri e a scavare trincee da campo, ma molto presto l'entusiasmo e il desiderio di compiere buone azioni si scontreranno con la realtà di un conflitto disumano e alienante, dove gli uomini si trasformano in spietate macchine da guerra. La realtà, che egli non osava immaginare, è fatta di atteggiamenti incomprensibili (tanto da citare la sua famosa frase «L'inferno è l'impossibilità della ragione»), di fanatismo, ottusità, soprusi sulle popolazioni locali, brutalità e...

Plot :

In 1967, Chris Taylor has dropped out of college and volunteered for combat duty in Vietnam. Assigned to Bravo Company, 25th Infantry Division near the Cambodian border, he is worn down by the exhausting conditions and his enthusiasm for the war wanes. One night his unit is set upon by a group of North Vietnamese Army (NVA) soldiers, who retreat after a brief confrontation. New recruit Gardner is killed while another soldier, Tex, is maimed by friendly fire from a grenade thrown by Sergeant "Red" O'Neill, with Taylor being mistakenly reprimanded by the ruthless Staff Sergeant Barnes. Taylor eventually gains acceptance from a tight-knit group in his unit who socialize and use drugs in a bunker clubhouse (the Underworld). He finds a mentor in Sergeant Elias, as well as the elder King, and becomes friends with two other soldiers, Lerner and Rhah.

During one patrol, a soldier named Manny is found mutilated and tied to a post while two others, Sal and Sandy, are killed by a booby trap. As tension mounts, the platoon soon reaches a nearby village where a supply cache is...
