Nel 1949 Freddie, un ragazzo sbandato e solo, dopo aver preso parte alla seconda guerra mondiale, torna in America con diversi problemi al sistema nervoso. Cerca di affidarsi alle cure che l'esercito gli offre, ma le sue ossessioni sessuali risultano incurabili. Così inizia a dedicarsi all'alcol tanto che un giorno si trova su una nave, senza sapere come abbia fatto ad imbarcarvicisi.
Così, in modo del tutto casuale, Freddie incontra Lancaster Dodd. La nave raccoglie infatti gli adepti di Dodd, che ha fondato un movimento denominata "la Causa", di cui è il carismatico capo spirituale. Il giovane ex-militare inizia a partecipare a qualche attività della setta...
