A father says goodbye to his young daughter and leaves. As the wide Dutch landscapes live through their seasons so the girl lives through hers. She becomes a young woman, has a family and in time she becomes old, yet within her there is always a deep longing for her father.

The monk & the fish - Il monaco e il pesce: la "singolar tenzone" di un monaco contro un pesce che sovverte le regole della tranquillità e dell'ordine. Fino a una metafisica follia... oppure a una ieratica transustanziazione.
Standing next to a water reservoir in a monastery enclave, a monk sees a fish and goes to get his net to catch it. The fish eludes him and the monk gets rather agitated as he tries increasingly extreme ways of catching the fish. He gets into the pond himself, and enlists the help of other monks; he tries candles, and a bow and arrow to no avail. The more the fish manages to evade him, the more obsessed the monk gets. He follows the fish out of the pond into a canal, through different landscapes and out of the confines of the monastery. Eventually the chase gets less frantic and the monk and the fish move in harmony. They float through a door into the open space and drift off into the sky together.

A small sphere travels in a determined and rhythmical manner through land-scapes, emerging at the end into a larger sphere of white light. Both the graphic brushstroke and the music, with its haunting rhythms, are strikingly simple and direct. The theme of the film, a quest followed by a union, is as old as time and recognizable despite its limitless variations.
 Michael Dudok de Wit
Michael Dudok de Wit, nato nel 1953 ad Abcoude, in Olanda, è regista, animatore e illustratore. Nel 1978, si è diplomato al West Surrey College of Art con il suo primo film, l'intervista. Dopo aver lavorato per un anno a Barcellona, si è stabilito a Londra, da dove tuttora dirige e anima premiatissimi spot pubblicitari per la televisione e per il cinema.
Nel 1992 ha realizzato il cortometraggio Tom Sweep, seguito da The monk e the fish (1994), prodotto in Francia con Folimage studio. Questo film è stato candidato all'Oscar e ha vinto numerosi premi, fra cui il Premio César per il miglior cortometraggio e il Cartoon d'Or. Michael scrive e illustra libri per bambini, oltre a insegnare animazione a scuole d'arte in Inghilterra e all'estero.
Il suo cortometraggio più noto, Father and Daughter (2000), ha vinto un Oscar, un BAFTA Award, il Grand Prix ad Annecy e decine di altri importanti riconoscimenti. Oltre a essere al 34° posto nella nostra lista, è al 4° posto nella lista dei 10 film più significativi della cinematografia olandese.

Michael Dudok de Wit (born in 1953, Abcoude, the Netherlands) is an animator, director and illustrator. In 1978, he graduated from the West Surrey College of Art with his first film The Interview. After working for a year in Barcelona, he settled in London where he directs and animates award-winning commercials for television and cinema. In 1992, he created the short film Tom Sweep, followed by The Monk and the Fish (1994), which was made in France with the studio Folimage. This film was nominated for an Oscar and has won numerous prizes including a César Award for Best Short Film and the Cartoon d'Or. Michael also writes and illustrates children's picture books and teaches animation at art colleges in England and abroad.
His most well-known film Father and Daughter (2000) won an Academy Award, a BAFTA Award, the Grand Prix at Annecy, and dozens of other major awards. His most recent short film is "The Aroma of Tea" (2006), drawn entirely with tea.
All of his films since Tom Sweep feature Michael's trademark brush stroke drawing and his use of ink and watercolour, very much inspired by Chinese and Japanese art.
His films: The Monk and the Fish and Father and Daughter were included in the Animation Show of Shows.
