La storia è narrata da un uomo che rimane anonimo per tutto il racconto (anche se è stato suggerito che si tratti dell'autore stesso, Jean Giono, ma non vi è alcuna certezza). La storia ha inizio nel 1910, quando il giovane narratore intraprende un'escursione in solitaria attraverso la Provenza, in Francia, arrivando fin sulle Alpi.

Il narratore finisce le scorte d'acqua in una vallata deserta e senza alberi, dove cresceva ovunque solo lavanda selvatica, senza alcun segno di civilizzazione, eccetto alcune strutture ormai abbandonate. Il ragazzo incontra un pastore di mezza età, che gli mostra una sorgente d'acqua che conosceva.

Curioso riguardo al pastore e alla vita solitaria che conduceva, decide di restare presso di lui per alcuni giorni. Il pastore, divenuto vedovo, aveva deciso di migliorare la landa desolata in cui viveva facendovi crescere una foresta, un albero per volta. Il pastore, che si chiamava Elzéard Bouffier, aveva piantato oltre 100mila querce; di queste, si aspettava che ne restassero in vita solo 10mila.

Il narratore torna a casa, e più tardi si arruola come soldato nella prima guerra mondiale. Nel 1920, traumatizzato e depresso, l'uomo torna dal pastore, ed è sorpreso alla vista di migliaia di alberelli in tutta la vallata, e nuovi torrenti dove non scorreva più acqua da anni. Da quel momento, il ragazzo tornerà a trovare Elezéard Bouffier ogni anno. Bouffier nel frattempo aveva cambiato mestiere, dato che il gregge di pecore rischiava di rovinare la sua opera, si iniziò a dedicare all'agricoltura.

Per quattro decenni, Bouffier ha continuato a piantare alberi, prima querce, poi faggi e betulle, e la valle si trasformava lentamente in una sorta di Giardino dell'Eden. La vallata ha ricevuto protezione ufficiale dopo la prima guerra mondiale (le autorità credevano che la rapida crescita della foresta fosse uno strano fenomeno naturale, poiché non sapevano del lavoro dell'uomo), e più di 10mila persone tornarono a viverci. Il narratore vede Bouffier per l'ultima volta nel 1945, ormai molto vecchio. L'uomo che piantava gli alberi morirà felicemente nel 1947, in un ospizio a Banon.

Il racconto è così toccante che molti lettori hanno creduto che Elzéard Bouffier fosse un personaggio realmente esistito e che il narratore fosse Jean Giono stesso, e che quindi la storia fosse in parte autobiografica. Sicuramente l'autore ha vissuto nel periodo in cui è ambientata la narrazione. L'autore ha spiegato, in una lettera del 1957 a un rappresentante della città di Digne:

"Mi dispiace deludervi, ma Elzéard Bouffier è un personaggio inventato. L'obiettivo era quello di rendere piacevoli gli alberi, o meglio, rendere piacevole piantare gli alberi".

Nella lettera descriveva come il libro era stato tradotto in una moltitudine di lingue, distribuito gratuitamente, e affermava che era stato un successo. Aggiunse anche che, sebbene non gli avesse fatto guadagnare nemmeno un centesimo, era stato uno dei testi di cui andava maggiormente fiero.

The tale is narrated by a man who remains anonymous throughout (although it has been suggested the narrator may perhaps be the author Jean Giono, there is no evidence for this). The story begins in the year 1910, when this young man is undertaking a lone hiking trip through Provence, France, and into the Alps, enjoying the relatively unspoiled wilderness.
The narrator runs out of water in a treeless, desolate valley where only wild lavender grows and there is no trace of civilization except old, empty crumbling buildings. The narrator finds only a dried up well, but is saved by a middle-aged shepherd who takes him to a spring he knows of.

Curious about this man and why he has chosen such a lonely life, the narrator stays with him for a time. The shepherd, after being widowed, has decided to restore the ruined landscape of the isolated and largely abandoned valley by single-handedly cultivating a forest, tree by tree. The shepherd, Elzéard Bouffier, makes holes in the ground with his curling pole and drops into the holes acorns that he has collected from many miles away.
The narrator leaves the shepherd and returns home, and later fights in the First World War. In 1920, shell-shocked and depressed after the war, the man returns. He is surprised to see young saplings of all forms taking root in the valley, and new streams running through it where the shepherd has made dams higher up in the mountain. The narrator makes a full recovery in the peace and beauty of the regrowing valley, and continues to visit Bouffier every year. Bouffier is no longer a shepherd, because he is worried about the sheep affecting his young trees, and has become a bee keeper instead.

Over four decades, Bouffier continues to plant trees, and the valley is turned into a kind of Garden of Eden. By the end of the story, the valley is vibrant with life and is peacefully settled. The valley receives official protection after the First World War. (the authorities mistakenly believe that the rapid growth of this forest is a bizarre natural phenomenon, as they are unaware of Bouffier's selfless deeds), and more than 10,000 people move there, all of them unknowingly owing their happiness to Bouffier. The narrator tells one of his friends in the government the truth about the natural forest, and the friend also helps protect the forest.
The narrator visits the now very old Bouffier one last time in 1945. In a hospice in Banon, in 1947, the man who planted trees peacefully passes away.

The Man Who Planted Trees (French: L'homme qui plantait des arbres) is a 1987 Canadian short animated film directed by Frédéric Back. It is based on the story of the same name by Jean Giono. This 30-minute short film was distributed in two versions - French and English - narrated respectively by noted actors Philippe Noiret and Christopher Plummer, and produced by Radio-Canada. t won the Academy Award for Best Animated Short Film, as well as several other awards that year. It competed for the Short Film Palme d'Or at the 1987 Cannes Film Festival.[1] In 1994, it was voted #44 of the 50 Greatest Cartoons of all time by members of the animation field.

RECENSIONE - REVIEW
Impossibile rimanere indifferenti, davanti a quella che è considerata all'unanimità una delle più grandi e poetiche realizzazioni del cinema d'animazione di tutti i tempi. Tratto da un romanzo (o, meglio, da un lungo racconto) dello scrittore francese Jean Giono, un libro che soltanto in Italia ha venduto oltre 200 mila copie e milioni in tutto il mondo, L'homme qui plantait des arbres resta un unicum anche nell'opera complessiva di Frédérick Back, francese trapiantato in Canadà, una delle più grandi leggende dell'animazione moderna.
Back, che con quest'opera vinse il suo secondo Oscar nel 1988 (il primo, nel 1981, lo aveva vinto con "Crac", affronta il romanzo guidato unicamente dall'amore e dalla passione ecologica. Pur sconsigliato dai produttori e dai collaboratori, che mai l'avevano visto accingersi a un'opera in cui il parlato fosse così importante (i cortometraggi di Back sono per lo più muti, affidati soltanto alla forza delle figure) e in cui la narrazione secca e schietta pareva così lontana dalla poetica dell'autore, Back compie un'opera di bellezza e poesia sovrumana.
Del romanzo di Giono coglie ogni sfumatura e in più aggiunge la sua poetica ecologista: degna di lui, che di alberi veri - nella sua vita - ne ha piantati più di 10 mila, quasi un reale Elezéard Bouffier.
Impossibile descrivere questo "cartone animato". Occorre vederlo e lasciarsi prendere dalla sua incredibile capacità di narrare attraverso immagini, fluida regia, musica sublime e voce narrante. Alla fine, non si potrà far altro che pensare (come milioni di persone hanno pensato) se questa non sia una storia vera. No, non lo è. E' nata dalla fantasia di Jean Giono. Ma sembra vera, la si sente vera, la si vuole fortissimamente vera, grazie anche e soprattutto a Back. Da guardarlo e riguardarlo senza limiti. Abbacinati e ammutoliti davanti a tanta bellezza.

Frédéric Back, OC, CQ (born April 8, 1924) is a Canadian animator.
Born in Saarbrücken, France, he emigrated to Canada in 1948. In 1952, he joined the graphics department of Radio-Canada and has remained there since.
He created a massive stained glass mural entitled L’histoire de la musique à Montréal ("history of music in Montreal" at the Place-des-Arts Metro station in Montreal. Unveiled on December 20, 1967, this stained glass was the first work of art to be commissioned for the Montreal metro system. In 1980, he was nominated for an Academy Award for Animated Short Film for his film Tout rien (All Nothing in English). In 1982, he won the Academy Award for Animated Short Film, for his film, Crac. In 1987, he won his second Academy Award for Animated Short Film for L'Homme qui plantait des arbres (The Man Who Planted Trees). In 1994, he was nominated again for an Academy Award for Animated Short Film, for his film Le fleuve aux grandes eaux (Mighty River in English).
He was nominated for a 1989 Governor General's Awards in the Children's Literature - Illustration category for L'Homme qui plantait des arbres. In 1989, he was made a Knight of the National Order of Quebec. In 1990, he was made an Officer of the Order of Canada. In 2004, he was awarded the Eco-Hero Media Award from the Planet in Focus film festival.
Frédéric Back is a vegetarian and animal rights activist. He often says : "Animal are my friends and I do not eat my friends". He gave conferences on the subject and participated to manifestations to support animal rights. He founded : "Société Québécoise pour la Défense des Animaux" a Society to protect animals.
