All\'interno del Dipartimento per la ricerca sul paranormale e la difesa c\'è aria di maretta. Il muscoloso detective Hellboy, per gli amici Red, è vittima tanto del suo capo Manning, che vorrebbe impedirgli di mettersi in mostra davanti agli umani, tanto della sua pirotecnica fidanzata Liz, che sembra avere un segreto e non volerglielo rivelare. Ma un pericolo molto più grande incombe sul B.P.R.D. e sul mondo intero: il principe Nuada del mondo delle tenebre, stanco di sopportare da secoli e secoli un\'umanità incapace di comprendere mondo e natura, ha risvegliato un esercito leggendario di macchine assassine al fine di annientarla. A Hellboy e al suo indistruttibile pugno di pietra il compito di fermarlo. Non senza qualche rimpianto...

In this continuation to the adventure of the demon superhero, an evil elf breaks an ancient pact between humans and creatures, as he declares war against humanity. He is on a mission to release The Golden Army, a deadly group of fighting machines that can destroy the human race. As Hell on Earth is ready to erupt, Hellboy and his crew set out to defeat the evil prince before The Golden Army can destroy humanity\'s existence.

La recensione - The review[/SIZE]

Chi, nel 2004, aveva osannato il talento di Guillermo Del Toro nel portare sullo schermo l\'eroe del fumetto creato da Mike Mignola, deve ricredersi: Hellboy si riduce ad una buona presentazione del personaggio di fronte ad secondo capitolo, Hellboy - The Golden Army, che brilla davvero nel buio della sala.
Rinunciando alla trama pseudo storica che ingarbugliava il primo tomo, e con essa ad una buona dose di fedeltà al fumetto, il regista messicano si diverte qui ad approfondire le relazioni tra i personaggi, raggiungendo nei dialoghi dei duetti da antologia, tanto tra Red e Abe, il mutante acquatico, quanto tra i due super \"piccioncini\". Ugualmente, la distanza tra i due mondi, quello \"normale\" e quello che non lo è affatto, si riduce al punto da prevedere dei \"passaggi\" che coincidono con alcune tra le sequenze visivamente più spettacolari del film (il mercato dei Trolls, l\'Irlanda del Nord).

Sebbene la storia in sé non si discosti dalla solita direttrice per cui un rappresentante del mondo occulto dichiara guerra a quello emerso mettendo in difficoltà il protagonista, diviso tra i due mondi e spesso inviso ad entrambi, in questo secondo episodio il tema dell\'eros e del suo legame drammatico e inscindibile con thanatos fornisce coerenza narrativa, poiché si declina tra il giustiziere rosso e Liz ma anche tra Abe e Nuala e tra i due pallidi gemelli delle tenebre.

In tutti i casi, è sul piano dei personaggi che Hellboy dà il meglio di sé. Vien da dire che è dai tempi di Guerre Stellari, di Ian Solo, della principessa Leila e di Chewbecca, che non si vedeva un trio come quello di Red, Liz e Abraham (alias Ron Perlman, Selma Blair e Doug Jones); e non sono da meno i secondari, specie la new entry ectoplasmica Johann Krauss e l\'apparizione dell\'Angelo della Morte, messaggero di una misteriosa profezia che potrebbe allungare la sua ombra sul futuro cinematografico dei nostri eroi.
Approfittando del fatto che \"Hellboy\" è un fumetto recente, privo della pesante tradizione di altri colleghi a strisce, Del Toro imprime a fuoco sulla serie in fieri il suo marchio di fabbrica e tinge con gusto il bianco e nero carico e gotico di Mignola con i suoi colori altrettanto carichi e \"fantasyosi\".

The feverish Hellboy II: The Golden Army is a very busy sequel that might have looked unhinged in the hands of a less visionary director than Guillermo del Toro. Ron Perlman returns as Hellboy, aka \"Red,\" the Dark Horse Comics demon-hero with roots in the mythical world but personal ties in the human realm. Still working, as he was in Hellboy, for a secret department of the federal government that deals (as in \"Men In Black\" with forces of the fantastic, Red and his colleagues take on a royal elf (Luke Goss) determined to smash a longtime truce between mankind and the forces of magic. Meanwhile, Red\'s relationship with girlfriend Liz (Selma Blair), who can burst into flames at will, is going through a rocky stage observed by Red\'s fishy friend Abe (Doug Jones), himself struck by love in this film. Del Toro brilliantly integrates the ordinary and extraordinary, diving into an extended scene set in a troll market barely hidden behind the façade of typical city streets. He also unleashes a forest monster that devastates an urban neighborhood, but then--interestingly--brings a luminous beauty to the same area as the creature (an \"elemental\" succumbs to a terrible death. Del Toro\'s art direction proves masterful, too, in a climactic battle set in a clockworks-like stronghold tucked away in rugged Irish landscape. But it\'s really the juxtaposition of visual marvels with not-so-unusual relationship issues that gives Hellboy II a certain jaunty appeal hard to find in other superhero movies. --Tom Keogh
