Inghilterrra, 1865. Se la moda dell'epoca imprigiona la donna dentro minuscoli corsetti e pesanti crinoline, le convezioni sociali la vogliono incatenata a un marito padrone e prepotente, senza slanci di passione o indipendenza. Abnegazione e modi compassati sono gli insegnamenti impartiti alle giovani fanciulle in età da marito, e le fondamenta solide su cui poggia un matrimonio resistente. La giovane Lady Macbeth rifiuta di vivere un'esistenza misera alle dipendenze di un marito negligente, e imbocca una strada di egoismo e violenza nel tentativo di affrancarsi dal vincolo tanto detestato. "Venduta" in moglie a un uomo che non ama e per di più con il doppio dei suoi anni, la diciassettenne Katherine (Florence Pugh) inizia una relazione clandestina con un giovane stalliere. La storia passionale giunta a interrompere la monotonia e la solitudine della vita di campagna, diventa una vera ossessione per la ragazza, tanto da spingerla a compiere gesti estremi e spietati. Il film segna l'esordio cinematografico di uno dei maggiori registi del teatro inglese, William Oldroyd.
