he title "Masters of Sex" works on many levels and the creators of the show are well aware of the attention that this title will draw. This show is about the first scientific research in the area of sex based on the Masters and Johnson studies, who are the protagonists of the story set to the backdrop of the late 1950's at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. The set design is just about right and it very accurately represents the theme and ideology of the time. The characters are sketched out perfectly and there is no dearth of good acting performances with Michael Sheen stealing the show for his portrayal of the incredibly complex William Masters. The main part of the show is of course the study of human sexual response which implies a lot of mature content. These scenes, however tastefully done, may be a little too strong for the average viewer but if one can get over the explicit content, one can see their relevance to the plot. The story still seems a little empty at certain times but can be expected to fill up as it progresses with the introduction of new characters. All in all, a very well presented and unique show.
USA, anni '50, il ginecologo William Masters decide di intraprendere, insieme alla sua assistente Virginia Johnson, uno degli studi piu' rivoluzionari della storia della medicina: come reagisce l'essere umano alla stimolazione sessuale? Osteggiato da medici e professori, Masters dovra' affrontare il muro del perbenismo della societa' americana di quegli anni mettendo a dura prova carriera e vita privata.
Ispirata al romanzo biografico di Thomas Maier "Masters of Sex: The Life and Times of William Masters and Virginia Johnson" e scritta da Michelle Ashford (gia' autrice di The Pacific), la prima stagione e' andata in onda sul canale americano Showtime e ha riscosso un ottimo successo di pubblico e critica.
Non mancano i contenuti hot, ma alla base del successo di Masters of Sex c'e' una scrittura sapiente, che mescola ironia e dramma e che si interroga profondamente sull'universo delle relazioni umane, con un occhio particolare alla condizione femminile. Al centro degli eventi non troveremo soltanto il sesso ma anche le tematiche della famiglia, dalle gravidanze difficili alle difficolta' di genitori single.
Il personaggio di Virginia e' infatti l'incarnazione della donna indipendente che vuole raggiungere l'emancipazione professionale e sociale, dovendo pero' fare i conti con due matrimoni falliti alle spalle e l'educazione dei suoi due bambini. Una donna affascinante, che non ha paura di confrontarsi con il sesso maschile e che proprio per questo motivo instillera' non pochi dubbi nell'animo dell'integerrimo Professor Masters.
Nel cast partecipazioni d'eccellenza come quella del grande Beau Bridges nel ruolo del Rettore Burton Scully.
Spesso associata a Mad Men, la serie si caratterizza per una cura certosina dei costumi e delle ambientazioni. Non mancano inoltre i richiami alla storia e alla situazione americana durante la minaccia nucleare degli anni '50.
Con due nomination per il i Golden globe per la miglior serie drammatica e il miglior attore protagonista in una serie drammatica, Masters of Sex si e' aggiudicata il Critic's choice television award come nuova serie tv piu' promettente.
