Nel 2154, una compagnia interplanetaria terrestre del Kansas, la RDA, intende sfruttare i giacimenti minerari di Pandora, luna del gigante gassoso Polifemo, appartenente al sistema stellare Alfa Centauri.
Pandora è un mondo primordiale, ricoperto da foreste pluviali, con alberi alti anche fino a trecento metri, ed è abitato da varie creature tutte decisamente spettacolari, tra cui degli umanoidi senzienti chiamati Na'vi, alti mediamente anche più di tre metri e con pelle blu striata. L'aria del satellite non è respirabile dagli umani se non impiegando maschere filtranti, in quanto contaminata da un miscuglio di sostanze tossiche, pertanto gli scienziati hanno sviluppato degli avatar, corpi ibridi genetici tra umano e Na'vi privi di coscienza propria: attraverso un'interfaccia mentale un uomo può trasferire la sua anima e la sua coscienza nel corpo dell'avatar e controllarlo come il suo corpo. Tale collegamento viene effettuato cadendo in una sorta di coma all'interno di una speciale capsula tecnologica...
