It's 2274 and on the surface, it all seems to be an idyllic society.
Living in a city within an enclosed dome, there is little or no work
for humans to perform and inhabitants are free to pursue all of the
pleasures of life. There is one catch however: your life is limited
and when you reach 30, it is terminated in a quasi-religious ceremony
known as Carousel. Some, known as runners, do try to escape their fate
when the time comes and it's the job of a Sandman to track them down
and kill them. Logan is such a man and with several years before his
own termination date, thinks nothing of the job he does. Soon after
meeting a young woman, Jessica-6, he is ordered to become a runner
himself and infiltrate a community outside the dome known as Sanctuary
and to destroy it. Pursued by his friend Francis, also a Sandman,
Logan and Jessica find their way to the outside. There they discover
a beautiful.
Trama:
------
Nel 2274, i sopravvissuti ad un immane disastro ecologico vivono in
città sotterranee, governate da inderogabili principi di assoluta
razionalità. Non essendo in grado di affrontare i problemi legati alla
sovrappopolazione, nè di sobbarcarsi il peso inutile dei vecchi e dei
malati, la società ha adottato uno spietato sistema per mantenere costante
il numero degli abitanti. Appena nato, ad ogni individuo viene incastonato
nel palmo della mano il fiore, un lucente sensore che subito inizia un
conto alla rovescia della durata esatta di 30 anni. Alla scadenza,
il fiore si spegne, e chi lo porta deve sottoporsi al rito della
rinascita, una suggestiva cerimonia al termine della quale viene
disintegrato. Logan è un poliziotto, incaricato di cacciare ed uccidere
chi tenta di sottrarsi all'eliminazione, ma quando viene il suo turno
di affrontare la rinascita fugge con Jessica, una ragazza decisa ad
affrancarsi da quella condizione disumana. Sfuggiti agli ex colleghi
di Logan, i due, dopo molte peripezie, emergono tra le rovine di Washington,
dove incontrano un essere mai visto, un vecchio (Ustinov), che conduce una
esistenza solitaria tra le mura fatiscenti del Senato americano, in mezzo
a dozzine di gatti randagi: la rigogliosa vegetazione, gli animali
e l'uomo sono la prova che la vita alla superficie è di nuovo possibile.
